I read lots of dorky technology blogs, and in summary, everyone has decided that big changes are afoot. We have been talking about Google’s backlink backlash. Google has been delisting, or moving, several sites that had been ranking very well. Overstock.com and JCPenny were both buying links to their sites in attempts to improve rankings. It worked, for awhile, but they got caught, and now their sites barely rank at all. In addition to that, two changes at Google. First, it seems PageRank is back. PR is the numerical score that Google gives every page on the Internet, telling

By AMIR EFRATI Google Inc. is penalizing Overstock.com Inc. in its search results after the retailer ran afoul of Google policies that prohibit companies from artificially boosting their ranking in the Internet giant’s search engine. More about my post from last week on Google and the Backlink Backlash…… by Josh McCoy on SearchEngineWatch One of the biggest events in a long time for the search marketing world began last week with the New York Times article on bad linking practices undertaken by JCPenney’s search engine optimization (SEO) firm, SearchDex. Google’s penalization wasn’t a big surprise to seasoned SEO veterans, considered their identified linking practices. However, this can be seen as a wake-up call to the rest of the online world — especially large corporations that have y

To read the Atlasphere interview about the movie trailer, click here. The movie opens April 15th, and the article mentions the movie will have 3 parts, not just the 2 I had heard about…. It has always been fun to compare real-Obama-life with the book. Do you understand that the new FCC rules allow it to “regulate innovation”? Other than stopping innovation that puts union members out of work, how do you regulate innovation? “You can’t invent that!” Craziness. ———————— The Interview ——&

Interesting article in the Bird Cage Liner today (that’s the New York Times to you capitalism haters!). I do hate this newspaper, but am willing to learn from anyone. This article is worth a quick mention. It is titled, “Blogs Wane as the Young Drift to Sites Like Twitter.” I mentioned in a blog several months ago that Boston University has quit giving email addresses to new students. Apparently, everyone is Facebook, Twitter, and sexting to communicate. At one level, it is amazing how fast technology comes and goes. radio ruled supreme for decades, TV for a shor

Today, the Financial Times reported on the exploding values of several net firms, raising the question, “Are we entering another internet bubble?” No, we are not, but we are seeing runaway stupidity again! And, as always the center of the stupidity is Twitter. Zynga, a gaming company that sells virtual goods to people playing online games, has revenues approaching $2.5-3 billion. recently it was valued at $5 billion in a private transaction, and is trying to raise another round of funds at a $9 billion valuation. I think anyone that buys anything “virtual” is

Important Thoughts on Google Backlink Building

At The Entrepreneur School, we teach SEO and Google optimization. As part of this strategy, we have used a fairly aggressive backlink building strategy, always knowing that what we were doing was borderline dangerous. There are many stories about Google delisting you because of overly aggressive backlink programs. Over the weekend, this article appeared in the New York Times (my least favorite bird liner) and it really has us thinking. Are we being too aggressive? We are decreasing our reliance on backlinks and will use some other ways to build traffic. But for your firms, this is i
